Tax-Free Weekend 2016

Sales Tax Holiday 2016

tax free weekend 2016

August 5 – 7, 2016

The 2016 Virginia three-day tax-free holiday will begin on Friday, August 5, at 12:01 a.m. and end on Sunday, August 7, at 11:59 p.m.

Under Virginia law, the tax rate is generally 5.3% (6% in certain jurisdictions) of the sales price and the tax rate on sales of food for home consumption is 2.5%. During this tax-free holiday weekend, consumers may purchase qualified items exempt of the sales and use tax.
On August 5-7, shoppers are encouraged to buy back-to-school items and take necessary precautions during hurricane season without paying state and local sales tax.

This holiday is not restricted to Virginia residents – anyone can purchase exempt items in Virginia during this holiday weekend, or buy exempt items for immediate delivery to a Virginia address well.

That means that during the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

In addition to the specific items exempted, retailers may also choose to offer other items “tax-free” by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.

Overview of Exempt Items

School Supplies, Clothing, and Footwear:

Qualified school supplies – $20 or less per item
Qualified clothing and footwear – $100 or less per item

< $20 Purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear are exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Santa Visits Lake of the Woods on His New Ride

Lake of the Woods~LOW~Locust Grove, VA

by Santa’s Elves

Santa will be visiting Lake of the Woods riding atop the newest firetruck, Engine 29 a 2015 Pierce Arrow XT 1500 GPM Pumper, on December 18, 19 and 20th. Each night Santa will start and end his journey with a loop through the lower level Clubhouse Parking lot, and end with closing the loop on Lakeview Parkway. He will also drive through the Sheetz, Food Lion and the Walmart parking lots at the end of his trip each night. His firetruck sleigh is a large vehicle to maneuver, and overhead trees and wires can be tricky, so Santa will be staying on the main roads (no cul-de-sacs.) A brush truck will lead the procession one block ahead. This will allow residents to safely make it to their door to see Santa.

The schedule is as follows:

Friday, December 18, starting about 5 PM (Marina Side LOW), Front Gate, the procession will head down Lakeview parkway to Yorktown Blvd and use the side streets to work its way past the back gate and stopping at Confederate Drive.

Saturday, December 19, starting about 5 PM (Golf Course Side), the procession will head down Lakeview Parkway to Confederate Circle and use the side streets to work its way back to the Front Gate.

Sunday, December 20, one trip around Lakeview Pkwy then to Section 16, Wilderness Shores and Somerset subdivisions

You can follow Santa as he visits our area on the 18th, 19th and 20th using the GPS tracker on the LOW Fire and Rescue webpage, under the Santa Tracker heading.

Wishing Everyone A Very Merry Christmas!

Friends of the Rappahannock Riverfest 2015

How many of you live in the greater Fredericksburg, VA area and have enjoyed the natural tranquility of the Rappahannock River on occasion? Probably most of you in one way or another, whether it be fishing, canoeing, swimming, tubing, or just relaxing on the banks on a lazy afternoon. Have you ever thought about what it would be like if the Rappahannock River became so polluted that it became unusable? If so, join me and my voice in supporting the Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) in preserving the health and picturesque nature of the Rappahannock River. One way that I enjoy to support the Friends of the Rappahannock’s efforts while enjoying a fun night out with good company, is through sponsoring the annual Riverfest. Riverfest “is the annual fundraiser for FOR’s advocacy, restoration and education programs” and is a wonderful way to give back to your community.

If you’ve never been to Riverfest, you are missing a blast of an evening with really good people; but most of all you are NOT assisting the efforts of saving the scenic Rappahannock in your own backyards. This year Riverfest will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 4pm-8pm at Fraley Vale Farm, overlooking the breathtaking Rappahannock in King George, VA. Come enjoy a cold one and crack a crab or two while listening to live entertainment alongside the Rappahannock. For the non-crab eaters, if there are any in Fredericksburg, there will also be ribs, chicken, and veggies for the liking. There will even be a silent auction with an array of items that you could end up walking home with. Sponsorships are still available and start at $250 for 2 tickets, which includes name recognition in the advertising at Riverfest. Individual tickets start at $100. Tickets are still available for Riverfest, but are ONLY sold in advance, so the time to get your tickets is now! Additional sponsorship packages and ticket information can be found out Come on out September 19th and join me in supporting this noteworthy cause. I’ll see ya there!
